Kentish Bus expanded rapidly during 1993, resulting in the acquisition of a large number of vehicles, 8 of which were Volvo Olympians (557-565 without 560). They were new for route 161.

After Kentish Bus gave up the contract for route 161s, they were subsequently deployed on other services, such as the 269 and 96. All were incorporated into the Arriva fleet, when Kentish Bus became Arriva Kent Thameside. 563 (L563 YCU) was the first to be withdrawn due to chassis corrosion, and was also robbed sympathetically of its engine and gearbox.

Because of these, 563 was available relatively cheaply and the decision was taken to acquire her for preservation. A donor vehicle was acquired which supplied a replacement Cummins engine and gearbox and a host of spares.
